As a leading health and safety pre-qualification assessment scheme, SafeContractor are dedicated to promoting higher standards of competence and compliance through the provision of relevant industry specific and tailored health and safety assessments for all professions and sectors. By making a public commitment and undergoing rigorous assessments, we are proud to have achieved the Investors in People Award.

Over the years local authority health and safety and procurement professionals, with the support of the Health and Safety Executive, have developed the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS). The scheme is available for use by any public and private sector organizations to use when short listing contractors, suppliers and consultants (companies) who apply to work for them.

Constructionline is the UK’s register of pre-qualified local and national construction and construction-related contractors and consultants. Owned and endorsed by the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (formerly the DTI), Constructionline is a contributor to the Rethinking Construction initiative.

SMAS is a registered member of SSIP. Since the launch of SSIP, many Clients and Principal Contractors now adopt an SSIP approach to H&S pre-qualification and will only use contractors who hold a valid and in date Scheme certificate issued by an SSIP Forum member.

Holding a valid SSIP Member Scheme certificate means that we have demonstrated our Stage 1 H&S competence by meeting the ‘core criteria’ as set out in the Construction (Design and Management) regulations.

In order to become a Buy With Confidence member, a business must first apply or be recommended to join the scheme and must then pass a set of tailored background checks. Membership of the scheme is not given lightly – amongst other checks, each applicant will have their complaints history reviewed and will receive a visit from Trading Standards. Good references are required from previous customers and applicants must agree to abide by the scheme’s code of conduct, which requires them to follow the letter and spirit of the law. Criminal records basic disclosure may also be required in some circumstances.

Only if all the scheme requirements are met, will a business be granted membership.
